Answers

Jorgie – 17- slightly empty and picture is out of focus – does not correlate so well with the image (maybe using a drop shadow behind the logo can make it appeal more)- use accenting fonts as well as a more focussed image- seems good so far ( can see it is in development)- it can be improved by using stock images to gather an idea of how you want the appearance to be – the pages flow well together- maybe use outlines on the text boxes to make it clearer to the audience.

Paige – 18 – The front cover challenges typical magazine conventions, for example the use of alcohol and the fact the image is out of focus, as long as this is justified I think it can get you a really good grade. I feel the colour of the logo seems slightly random, yet is more justifiable when I realised the DPS is the same colour. The front cover could have more cover lines to make it feel slightly less empty. The contents page is good, yet I feel the blue colour is totally different to the cover logo and the DPS therefore it disrupts the continuous theme. Changing the blue to the same blue as the DPS and logo or changing it to a totally different colour may suit better because it feels like far too much blue. The placement of the text in the DPS is very interesting, I like it and the borders tie in with the logo on the front cover as I have already mentioned. It clearly needs images added, but so far really good!

The conclusion I can draw from those responses are that the strengths in my magazine lie in my layout and house style but the pictures and colours need work.

Skills development: Indesign - How to set up a flatplan

Before I did this coursework I had never used Adobe InDesign only Adobe Photoshop and InDesign is not the easiest to learn quickly and even now I only use InDesign when I have to like with the contents page and double page spread.
I learned how to set up a new document to meet my needs.
I learned how to add picture frames and how they worked.
How to add in shapes and change their colour.
I also learned how to use the scissor tool.

All of these will help me make the best magazine i can.

Mood Board

To create this mood board I looked at my customer profile and picked photos and concepts that I felt would most help me try and put myself in their shoes so I could make the magazine as appealing to them as possible. I chose mastheads and fonts I liked from popular magazine of the same type as I would like to make. I also got pictures of popular bands and artists from the genres my target audience like. I also got pictures from popular brands that my target audience like.

Evaluation of College magazine

1. How does your magazine represent social groups?
I used pictures of students. The first picture is of a student at a computer with a book in front of him which has the connotations of education and knowledge. The second picture I used was a bunch of students around a table which has connotations of socialising, it also featured a boy in a wheel chair and a girl so gives the connotation of diversity. The third picture I used was a student and man shaking hands, the man is wearing a suit so gives connotations of power and authority and of those two groups getting along.
2.What aspects of your work are you pleased with and why?
I think my front cover came together well, I was worried the slanted mast head would cause issues but it fitted in quite nicely and my use of the same colour scheme as the college came off well
3. What aspects of your work could be improved on and why?
I think that the contents page needs refinement because its a bit unorganised and is not as clear and consise as I would like it to be.
